ARCHIVES // HIGHTIDE 2007 (6th-8th April)
HighTide 2007 was the inaugural HighTide Festival. The festival premiered 8 new, half-hour plays, written by emerging playwrights from around the country.

The four full productions were Lyre by Megan Walsh >>, Ned and Sharon by Sam Holcroft >>, You Were After Poetry by Steven Bloomer >> and Weightless by Sarah Cuddon >>.

The four readings were Assembly by Tom Basden >>, Inside Out by Matthew Morrison >>, VII/ VII by Pericles Snowdon >> and Oscar and Jim by Iain Weatherby >>.

Following selection from a stiff pool of competition, the writers were paired up with emerging directors, and mentored over a three month development period by Paul Sirett and Richard Shannon. HighTide also set up masterclasses for our writers and directors with leading theatre practitioners such as Joe Penhall, Richard Eyre, David Farr and Nick Wright.

Over the weekend itself, we were also proud to feature Max Stafford-Clark in conversation with Nina Raine, whilst Libby Purves hosted a panel discussion on ‘New Writing Today’ with guests Colin Teevan, Rebecca Lenkiewicz and Kate Bassett. Our night of comedy and poetry included Dean Parkin from The Poetry Trust, the comic collective Aisle 16 and the acclaimed double act Freeze, starring If.Comedy (nee Perrier) Best Newcomer Award winner Tom Basden and Perrier Award Best Newcomer Nominee Tim Key. Suffolk-born singer/songwriter Tom Baxter played to a sell-out crowd on the Saturday night and we screened the acclaimed feature ‘A Lawless Heart’ starring HighTide patron Bill Nighy, followed by a Q&A with writers/directors Tom Hunsinger and Neil Hunter. HighTide 2007 also included two screenings of short films made by emerging filmmakers, including Sebastian Godwin, Mahdi Fleifel, Mary Nighy, Alex Winckler, and O’Neill Sharma.
